Walnut Creek Watershed Festival/Clean-up Date Correction in Recent Article in the Register

Although the article in yesterday’s Register was great, the date for the festival and clean-up was a little misleading. The date of the Watershed Festival/Clean-up is set for August 31, 2013.

The Walnut Creek Watershed Coalition, in association with the Raccoon River Watershed Association, and the City of Windsor Heightson August 31, 2013, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, is sponsoring a community celebration of the Walnut Creek Watershed, featuring a creek clean-up, an array of demonstrations and exhibits about storm water runoff, the environment, and conservation.

Many people in Iowa enjoy using our streams, creeks, lakes and rivers to fish, kayak, canoe, swim and wade. Everyone in a watershed has a stake in the health of its water, and this outdoor celebration will show how we all impact the water quality and what we can do to protect it. Come celebrate and enjoy the events including: the creek clean-up, rain barrel displays, Project AWARE information, IOWATER sampling demonstrations, catching and identifying bugs, various children’s activities, etc.

Also, the Iowa Environmental Council will be making fish prints with the kids and Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR) will be present with owls, owl pellets, and Iowa Avian information.

Children will get the chance to find their home on a watershed map, make fish prints, and and learn about fish and aquatic insects, etc.

By attending this watershed festival, you will gain a better understanding about storm water runoff impacts and learn how to make a difference in your own yard and neighborhood; and have a great time with family, friends and neighbors!

The clean-up is great for families, scout, school groups and anyone who loves the environment and clean water. All ages are welcome to join in the clean-up.

Volunteers will meet at the Colby Park Pavilion at 10:00 a.m. Gloves, trash bags, water, and snacks will be provided. We’ll gather for a photo and then head out to a number of locations along Walnut Creek and North Walnut Creek. Come out for a great day in the creek, and help clean-up this great resource.

After the clean-up, please join us for a trash tally, refreshments, and a BBQ.

School Supply Success- National Night Out Against Crime (NNO)
August 20, 2013, 6:50 pm

The Windsor Heights Police Association along with several sponsors hosted this years’ National Night Out on August 6th. The beautiful evening brought out an estimated crowd of over 500. Residents took part in games, activities and demonstrations.

This year the Windsor Heights Police Association hosted a school supply drive, benefiting area schools. The Police Department collected supplies such as crayons, markers, papers, pencils and other supplies needed to attend school. In addition to those items donated by attendees, the Windsor Heights Police Association purchased over $600 of needed school supplies. The association would not have been able to purchase these items without the donations from our community and the items sold at silent auction. These supplies were divided between Windsor Elementary, Clive Elementary and Cowles Montessori schools.
